On December 7, 2023, the Directorate-General for Education (DGE) made public the revised and updated version of the Referencial de Educação para os Media a national reference document for teaching this area to students from pre-school to secondary school. It should be remembered that the first version of the document dates back to 2014.
The new version of the document retains the original author team (MILObs coordinators Sara Pereira and Manuel Pinto, together with Eduardo Jorge Madureira), but has included contributions from partners in different areas of intervention.
It is a flexible document that can be used in formal, non-formal or informal contexts, in whole or in part, particularly in the context of the “National Strategy for Citizenship Education”, through the Citizenship and Development component.
According to the DGE, “it is also envisaged that it could be adopted as a working tool by other public or private organizations with an interest in intervening in the field of Media, in the context, among others, of the production of educational resources and the training of teachers”.
It is structured around eight main themes: Media, information and current affairs; Types and languages of the media; Media access, uses and practices;
Creation, production and participation; Freedom and ethics; Fiction and entertainment; Advertising, publicity and brands; Companies and professionals.
